Dear Ranson Elementary Families,
It is with great excitement and honor that I introduce myself as the new Principal of Ranson Elementary School. My name is Sybil Terry, and I bring 40 years of experience in education to this role. Throughout my career, I have been dedicated to helping students achieve success, and I am thrilled to join the Ranson Elementary community.
As we begin this new school year together, my goal is to move our students forward academically, socially, and emotionally while providing a safe, caring, and engaging learning environment. I am eager to meet and work with all of our students and families and look forward to building strong relationships throughout the year.
Like many schools across West Virginia, we have been affected by the statewide shortage of teacher applicants. As a result, we will begin the school year with some long-term substitutes in our building. Please know that these individuals are highly qualified and experienced in the subjects and grade levels they will be supporting. They along with all teachers will be reaching out to introduce themselves through Rooms, email, or a phone call prior to the start of school.
I believe that strong communication between school and home is essential to student success. I maintain an open-door policy and welcome you to contact me with any questions, concerns, or suggestions you may have. My top priorities are your child's safety, well-being, and education.
I would like to invite you to stop by and meet me, along with my administrative team, on Tuesday, August 11, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Joining me will be:
• Ms. Laura Schuyleman, Assistant Principal
• Mrs. Amy Ashman, Administrator in Residence
We look forward to meeting you and answering any questions you may have as we prepare for an exciting school year.
We also welcome and encourage parent volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, we will be sending information regarding our brief volunteer training sessions. We hope you will consider sharing your time and talents with our school community.
You should receive your child's bus information on Monday, August 3. If you have questions regarding transportation or bus schedules, please contact the Transportation Department directly.
In addition, you can expect to hear from your child's teacher during the week of August 10.
Our Open House will be held on Thursday, August 13, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. This event will provide students and families with an opportunity to meet teachers, visit classrooms, and become familiar with the school. Due to time constraints, Open House is not intended for parent-teacher conferences, but rather as a chance to say hello and help students feel comfortable and prepared for the first day of school. As an additional treat, the Almost Heaven Frozen Custard Truck will be on school grounds during Open House. Families are welcome to stop by and purchase a sweet treat while visiting the school. We hope this provides an enjoyable opportunity for families to connect, celebrate the beginning of a wonderful school year, and make lasting memories as we prepare for an exciting year ahead.
As a reminder, breakfast and lunch will once again be provided free of charge to all students.

I am beyond excited to welcome our students back and look forward to a year filled with learning, growth, fun, and engagement. What better way to end the school year than with a Staff vs. 5th Grade basketball game? RES students cheered on their favorite teams this morning and enjoyed a halftime performance by our own cheerleaders and third graders.
Yesterday, RES celebrated fifth grade with a matriculation ceremony, honoring their accomplishments this year. We wish you the best in middle school!
Congratulations to our Kindergarten students for graduating! As part of their celebration, Kindergarten classes created posters with their handprints, intending to add to them in fifth grade. We are so proud of you all!
Congratulations to fifth grader Kiera Hayes on winning Ranson Mayor for the Day! Keira visited the mayor's office and took a tour of the city's facilities.
Students and families at RES enjoyed a concert by the 5th-grade band and 4th and 5th-grade chorus. The students did an amazing job!

CANVAS UPDATE: 5/8/2026
Canvas was down the evening of Thursday, May 7, 2026, due to a reported data breach. Early reports indicate this impacts over 8,000+ public schools, colleges, and institutions across the country. JCS is an impacted organization.
Indications so far are that the information involved includes student/staff names, JCS/WVDE-issued student/staff ID numbers (not social security numbers), email addresses, and messages between users on the platform.
JCS has no evidence of a compromise to internal district systems. Our Technology Team is actively assessing impact and implementing precautionary safeguards.

JCS Communities: All JCS schools have been released from their SECURE or LOCKDOWN. WMS families will be picking their students up at Sam Micahels Park today. We ask that you follow your regular pickup practice, as not to overwhelm our schools or roads as law enforcement continue their work..
Mrs. Mossburg's class and some second-grade friends took the initiative and helped contribute to keeping our Earth clean on Wednesday afternoon. They ventured out to the playground area and picked up any trash they could see. Thanks for keeping our playground beautiful!
Congratulations to RES' Students of the Month and Principal's Award. These students were selected by their teachers and Mr. Astorino for displaying honesty through the month of March.
As the year comes to an end, fifth grade students in Mrs. Dixon's class created shadow images of themselves, writing advice they would tell their younger self. Teachers in the building also have the opportunity in the coming weeks to write messages to the fifth graders as they finish elementary school and begin their middle school journey.

Kindergarten students at RES celebrated the end of their Kings and Queens unit by dressing like royalty. All three classes paraded through the halls for their royal subjects and enjoyed tea parties in their classrooms.

Jefferson County Schools will operate on a modified Non-Traditional Instruction Day (NTID) on Monday, March 16. All evening activities are canceled.
This decision was made after monitoring the weather throughout the weekend and consulting with the National Weather Service Charleston, WV, office this evening. Forecasted severe storms, including high winds up to 80 mph, heavy rain, and the potential for tornadoes, are creating too much uncertainty to plan for either an early or standard dismissal tomorrow afternoon. Keeping students at home helps us avoid putting them or our staff in harm's way.
What This Means for Your Student:
- Students will not report to school tomorrow and will complete their learning from home.
- K–5 students will find assignments and information posted in Rooms, as we did not send devices home for Canvas access.
- 6–12 students should follow the normal NTID process and connect with their teachers through their usual platforms.
- Teachers and staff will be available to support students from 9:15 am – 12:00 pm.
All LSIC meetings scheduled for tomorrow are cancelled and will be rescheduled. Math Field Day has been postponed to Wednesday, March 18.

JCS Families: JCS will operate on a 2-hour delay on Tuesday, March 3, due to weather.
Last week, first grade students in Mrs. Mills' class enjoyed a tea party as a reward for positive behavior. Students dressed in fancy outfits and enjoyed macarons, cucumber sandwiches and tea or lemonade. Way to go, Mrs. Mills' class!
Over the past two months, the librarian and STEAM teacher collaborated with students in grades 2–5 to create habitat dioramas. Students worked independently or with partners to research an animal and its habitat in the library. They then applied their research in STEAM class by designing and building detailed dioramas of their chosen habitats. Using a variety of materials available in the STEAM classroom, students selected the supplies that best represented their learning and creativity. The finished projects are now on display in the school.
